NAIOP, the Commercial Real Estate Development Association, has named Jennifer LeFurgy, Ph.D., as vice president for knowledge and research. She previously served the association in the position of director of research.

In this role, LeFurgy will lead the activities of the association’s knowledge and research department, including the semi-annual NAIOP CRE Sentiment Index, and serve as editor-in chief of Development magazine, the association’s quarterly publication that is recognized as an influential industry resource. Under her leadership as part of the NAIOP Research Foundation, she will lead the department and governors of the Research Foundation in identifying trends and conducting research studies related to trends and opportunities in commercial real estate.

“Jennifer’s career and education experiences, combined with her knowledge of the commercial real estate industry, will be key in her role of spearheading much of our industry content in the magazine and research studies,” said NAIOP President and CEO Thomas J. Bisacquino. “Her extensive background in research within an academic environment will be essential as she strengthens the work of the NAIOP Research Foundation and engages with practitioners, researchers and academics to deliver the most current and relevant knowledge to our 19,000 members across North America.”

LeFurgy has more than two decades of experience in community development. She previously worked for Virginia Tech in Northern Virginia, first serving the deputy director of the College of Architecture and Urban Studies’ Metropolitan Institute and then as research faculty for the Arlington Innovation Center: Health Research. In 2017, while at Virginia Tech, she completed her doctoral dissertation that examined the policy implications of aging in place in the U.S. suburbs. Previously she was a senior associate at the Urban Land Institute and worked as a pre-development consultant on workforce housing for the California State University. She has served as a voluntary program reviewer for the Community Development Financial Institutions (CDFI) Fund, a U.S. Treasury Department initiative that that invests federal dollars alongside private sector capital in neighborhoods that lack access to traditional sources of financing.

She holds a master’s degree in urban planning from the University of Virginia and an undergraduate degree from the University of Rochester.
