New Congress Chooses Speaker

January 07, 2025 | Washington, D.C.

The 119th Congress was sworn in Jan 3., but not without a little drama in the House of Representatives, where voting for House Speaker Mike Johnson’s reelection was delayed while two holdout Republican members took calls from President-elect Donald Trump before switching their votes, giving Johnson a 218-215-1 victory. The need for direct intervention from Trump on Johnson’s behalf is likely a sign of the challenging times ahead for the narrow GOP majority.

Congress is expected to move quickly on Trump’s agenda in an effort to fulfill the president’s many campaign promises, including those regarding border security and tax cuts. Discussions between the Republican leaders in the House and Senate are ongoing as to whether to package most of Trump’s and the Republican majority’s domestic agenda priorities into one budget reconciliation bill that could move early.
