Congressional Hearings on Cabinet Nominees and Tax Cuts

January 14, 2025 | Washington, D.C.

Congressional committees will be focused this week on President-elect Donald Trump’s cabinet nominees, and on renewal of the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (TCJA), a key part of his domestic agenda.

On Thursday the Senate Committee on Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs will hold a confirmation hearing for Eric Scott Turner, Trump’s pick to head the Department of Housing and Urban Development. Turner, a former professional football player and Texas state legislator, served as director of the White House Opportunity and Revitalization Council during Trump’s first term. He worked on economic development issues, including serving as a key person on the opportunity zones program established by the TCJA.

Last week, Jason Smith (R-MO), Chair of the House Ways and Means Committee, announced a hearing for Tuesday titled “The Need to Make Permanent the Trump Tax Cuts for Working Families.” The committee hearing is the kickoff for the debate on renewing the TCJA and the broader budget reconciliation bill that Trump and Congress will be focused on over the course of the year.
