Speaker of the House Mike Johnson (R-LA) will try to move a two-tiered temporary funding measure that would extend funding for some federal agencies through Jan. 17 and others through Feb. 2. Current funding for government agencies will expire this Friday, Nov. 17, unless the House and Senate agree on the funding extension. The staggered funding bill is intended to prevent the end-of-year, omnibus spending bill introduced just before the December holidays, which has become the norm. Omnibus spending bills are typically opposed by House fiscal conservatives because they often include higher levels of spending with little opportunity for debate.
Senate leaders have not rejected Johnson’s budget measure, although Senate legislation would continue current levels of funding into next year for all government agencies. If Johnson’s measure does not pass the House, he has promised to bring up for a vote a full-year continuing resolution with increases only for defense and national security priorities.
