Stijn Van Nieuwerburgh’s research lies in the intersection of real estate, asset pricing, and macroeconomics. He studies the impact of remote work on real estate valuations, affordable housing policies, the impact of foreign buyers on the housing market, mortgage market design, regional house price inequality, and mortgage choice. Another recent strand of his research focuses on government debt and fiscal policy.
He co-authored the 2022 article “Work From Home and the Office Real Estate Apocalypse.” Van Nieuwerburgh served as the President of the American Real Estate and Urban Economics Association in 2022 and he currently serves as board member of the American Finance Association. Prior to Columbia University, he spent 15 years at New York University’s Stern School of Business.
